The Hanbury Gardens, a haven of peace on the Riviera

Mythical villas on the French Riviera: Hanbury Botanic Gardens

The Hanbury Gardens, located in one of the most beautiful villas on the French Riviera, are considered by many as the most beautiful botanic gardens on the whole coast.

The French Riviera attracted many figures of the aristocracy by the end of the 19th century, to who is to attribute the wonderful villas, and equally exceptional gardens, which made the renown of the area. While your luxury real estate agency, Cap Riviera, proposes the best addresses to rent or purchase amongst the most prestigious villas on the French Riviera, let’s find in its News page the best visits to make, once you’re properly installed.

Along the Via Julia Augusta, very close of Menton but not yet at Ventimiglia, raises the Cap Mortola, a hundred meters besides the sea and reaching it, with steep rocks. Upon those 18 hectares, Thomas Hanbury, a rich English Lord, set his sight in 1867. On the clever advices of his brother David, pharmacist, he started to realize what is going to be one of the most beautiful acclimatization garden of the Mediterranean coast, and also one of the most beautiful villas on the French Riviera.

Himself having lived amongst exotic plants, because of his career in spices, teas and silks trade from India and China, he chose this magical place, between earth and sea, to grow directly imported varieties. Less than 20 years after, in 1883, 600 species grew quietly. In 1912, they were 5 800. Today, they are 7 000 to grow together.

If they focused massively upon gardens, making emerge Australian cactuses and eucalyptuses, a Japanese garden, a Moorish mausoleum, a lot of vernacular citrus trees and ancient rose bushes, the residence is not less majestic. Built in the 16th century, it offers generous proportions, of which the Sir Hanbury daughter-in-law, Lady Dorothy Symons, managed to enhance, while she continued to maintain assiduously the pomp of the gardens. Today under the control of the University of Genova, the Hanbury Botanic Gardens welcome visitors all year long, during summer every day from 9 am to 6 pm.
